Safeguarding at My Lighthouse Learning
The safety and wellbeing of every learner is fundamental to how we work. This page explains the principles and expectations that support safe, professional online learning at My Lighthouse Learning.

1. Our commitment to safeguarding
My Lighthouse Learning is committed to providing a safe, respectful and professional online learning environment for children and young people. Safeguarding considerations form part of how we design and deliver teaching, how we communicate with families and how we manage online interactions.
We expect everyone involved in learning – teachers, learners and parents or guardians – to play a role in promoting safety, wellbeing and respectful behaviour. We keep our approach to safeguarding under review as our services develop and as good practice and legal requirements evolve.
2. A safe online learning environment
Online lessons should take place in an environment where learners can participate safely and comfortably. This includes having a suitable device, a stable internet connection and an appropriate space for learning.
We encourage parents and guardians to:
• know when lessons are taking place;
• ensure the learner has an appropriate place from which to join lessons;
• remain reasonably available where appropriate for the learner’s age and needs; and
• ensure contact and emergency information is kept up to date.
These arrangements help us respond promptly if a concern arises and support a calm, focused learning experience.
3. Professional boundaries
Teachers are expected to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with learners at all times. Communication should relate to learning, lessons, progress, scheduling or other legitimate educational matters.
Teachers should communicate with children and families through approved or agreed channels rather than informal personal channels. They should not request or accept inappropriate personal contact details or engage in private social media contact with learners.

4. Communication with parents and learners
Parents and guardians should normally be kept appropriately informed about a child’s learning and progress. For younger learners in particular, administrative matters such as bookings, payments, significant changes to learning arrangements and important concerns will usually be handled with the parent or guardian.
As learners grow older and more independent, it may be appropriate for them to take a more active role in communication about their learning. The exact level of parental involvement may vary according to the learner’s age, needs and circumstances, but we aim to keep parents and guardians appropriately informed.
5. Online lessons
Teachers and learners are expected to behave appropriately during live online lessons.
Expectations include:
• using respectful language and behaviour;
• wearing appropriate clothing;
• ensuring that the visible surroundings are suitable for learning;
• not displaying or sharing inappropriate material; and
• using lesson technology for its intended educational purpose.
Teachers are expected to maintain professional conduct throughout each session and to address inappropriate behaviour in line with safeguarding responsibilities.
6. Recording lessons
Where any lesson or session is to be recorded, learners and/or their parents or guardians will be informed as appropriate, and recordings will be handled in accordance with applicable privacy and data-protection requirements.
We do not intend this section to imply that recording routinely occurs. If you have questions about whether a particular session may be recorded, please contact us.
7. Photos, video and learner information
Photographs, video, personal information and examples of learner work should be handled carefully. Identifiable images, recordings, testimonials or learner work should not be used publicly for marketing or promotional purposes without the appropriate permission from the learner and/or their parent or guardian, as applicable.

8. If a safeguarding concern arises
Any concern about a learner’s safety or wellbeing should be taken seriously. Where a teacher or member of My Lighthouse Learning becomes concerned about a child’s safety or wellbeing, appropriate action may be taken in line with safeguarding responsibilities and applicable law.
In some circumstances this may require information to be shared with an appropriate safeguarding professional, authority or emergency service. While we aim to treat information sensitively, we cannot promise complete confidentiality where safeguarding concerns exist.
9. Raising a concern about My Lighthouse Learning
If you have any concern about the behaviour of a teacher, an online interaction or any aspect of the learning environment, please raise it as soon as possible.

10. Parents and guardians
Parents and guardians play an important role in safe online learning. We ask parents and guardians to:
• provide accurate learner and contact information;
• tell us about relevant needs or circumstances that affect safe participation in lessons;
• support appropriate online behaviour and respectful communication;
• raise any concerns promptly; and
• ensure that the learner uses appropriate technology and an appropriate learning environment for lessons.
Working together helps us create a safe and supportive learning experience.
11. Learner expectations
We aim to explain safeguarding in simple, accessible language for learners.
Learners are expected to:
• treat teachers and other learners respectfully;
• use lesson technology appropriately and follow reasonable instructions;
• avoid sharing unnecessary personal information during lessons or in chat;
• tell a trusted adult if something during online learning makes them uncomfortable or concerned; and
• understand that they can raise a concern about anything that does not feel right.
We encourage parents and guardians to discuss these expectations with their child.
12. Privacy and safeguarding
Safeguarding and privacy responsibilities sometimes overlap. Personal information will normally be kept appropriately private and shared only with those who need to know it for legitimate reasons.

13. Keeping safeguarding under review
We keep our safeguarding arrangements and this page under review as our services develop and as good practice and legal requirements evolve.
When we make significant changes to our safeguarding approach or this page, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top. We encourage parents, guardians and learners to review this information from time to time.
